The Department of Home Affairs have introduced a pilot Global Talent visa offering Australian businesses the opportunity to sponsor skilled overseas workers for up to 4 years.
The Global Talent Scheme (GTS) allows established Australian businesses or technology start ups to sponsor technical and specialised positions that cannot be filled by Australian employees. The new visa has been welcomed and it is anticipated that top global talent will support Australian business growth. The Scheme runs in conjunction with the new Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS) that replaced the old 457 visa in March 2018.
Some key features of the Scheme:
- Access up to 20 positions for established businesses and 5 position for start ups
- Faster processing times
- Pathway to permanent residency.
To be eligible for the new scheme, businesses will need to demonstrate their commitment to upskilling and providing work opportunities for Australians. Established businesses must be accredited sponsors, publicly listed or demonstrate an annual turnover of at least $4 million for each of the past 2 years. Start up businesses must be technology based or STEM related.
