The Department of Home Affairs have now confirmed that the new Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) training levy will come into effect from 12 August 2018. The SAF will apply for all new TSS visas (subclass 482) nominations and permanent visa nominations (subclasses 186 and 187).
The new Skilling Australians Fund will replace current training benchmark requirements, which is good news for many sponsors who previously struggled to evidence that their business had spent at least 1% of overall payroll on training Australian employees or were required to make contribution of 2% of payroll to a Training Industry Fund.
The change is part of the government’s initiative to invest in training and upskilling of Australians and will prioritise funds for apprenticeships, traineeships, pre-apprenticeships, and higher level apprenticeships for occupations in high demand, areas with future growth potential as well as rural and regional Australia.
Levy for businesses with turnover less than $10M:
- $1200 per Temporary Skill Shortage Visa per year
- $3000 per Permanent visa subclass 186/187.
Levy for businesses with turnover more than $10M:
- $1800 per Temporary Skill Shortage Visa per year
- $5000 per Permanent visa subclass 186/187.
The Department has also announced that further changes may also be introduced for the TSS program including changes to labour market testing and part time work arrangements for some occupations.
